Album Title: Rose Falcon
Label: Sony Music/Columbia Records
http://www.columbiarecords.com
Release Date: March
Artist Info: Born in New York City on May 2, 1984, Rose was not a stranger to music. The daughter of Bon Jovi songwriter, Billy Falcon, has entered the mainstream with her freshman album, and is providing a positive alternative to other artists grabbing for the attention of the teens in our society. If you visit her personal site (not the Columbia Records site), you will find that she is a person of strong faith, and has a great desire to share it with others. In her forums on the site, you will see that Rose frequently responds to fans, and shares scripture throughout her forum. Very Impressive.
Review:
Music: Rose falcon's music is very positive and uplifting. At times it does appear as though she doesn't possess a huge vocal range, but she does have an amazing songwriting ability that makes up for this. Her vocal range will develop further as she continues her career. To this end, however, I did find myself getting a bit bored with the album, not wanting to listen to it repeatedly (Like every day for 2 weeks...). Again, this is her first album, and I rarely like anybody's first album. Overall, the collection is not bad at all. My wife really enjoyed the song "Breakable" while "Up, Up, Up" was my favorite.
Score: 3
Ministry: There is not much to report here. As this is not really a Christian Album, but rather, a Christian person making an album, there really is no message at all: that is, if you consider the album as the record label wants it. Rose does have a strong faith, and longs for us to hear her share it, and the gospel. Unfortunately for Ms. Falcon, and to us, two of her songs, "God Can You Find Me" and "Light of Mine", were pulled from the record without the consultation of the Artist. As such, the album itself includes no references to Jesus, God, or her faith (again, as the record label wanted... The actual album as designed by the artist did, however.) I did get a copy of a letter that her aunt, Joan, sent to Oprah where she expresses how strong Rose's faith is, but again, there are no references to this anywhere on her (Sony/Columbia Records)website, or her album (Another record label thing??). Somehow the label forgot to edit out Rose's credits where she begins with "From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for his grace and mercy." I will give Ms. Falcon BIG marks for not spewing out a load of rubbish just to fit in with her mainstream counterparts (Brittany and Christina, et. all). I applaud her for not including all the references to "relationship breakdown and sexual entanglement" [Blender Magazine]. I scored her a bit lower here because of the editing job by the record label, even though she had no control over this.
Score: 3
Intangibles: Pleasant looking album cover. Nice use of the rose theme. There are no negatives in this category here. She does have a nice tribute to Jesus Christ in the credits at the end. (See above...)
Score: 1
Bottom Line: 7 out of 10
Rose Falcon will grow into a much more mature artist, but I was not overly excited by her first offering. Though I have read about how strong her faith is, and how she is a Christian, the casual passerby who finds her album on the street will not know of her faith as any reference to it is missing from both the album and the website thanks to her Record label. I applaud her for not slipping into the normal mode of exposing herself and calling it "art", but providing a positive/upbeat message that any parent should actually approve of as appropriate listening for their teen/pre-teen. There are some songs on the album that are quite enjoyable, but overall, it is not the greatest of freshman albums out there, but definately not the worst. I would definately consider adding more of Rose Falcon to my CD rack. What would I change?? Rose, I would encourage you to find a new record label, or start one of your own. One where you are free to express your faith. And get those missing songs out there! Also, I would like to encourage you to keep on with what you are doing. I am sure that all of your work will be in my collection soon enough!!.
NOTE:I would like to thank Brian Mayes for sharing with me additional information on Rose Falcon, and getting it to me quickly after posting the orginal review. I originally scored her album much lower because I didn't have all of the information he did. I would like to apologize to Brian, Rose, and all her fans for making a review that was not based upon a more thorough knowledge of her. Thank you.
